Fort St. John, BC

One of the first European settlements in BC, Fort St. John was originally established in the 18th century when Alexander MacKenzie set up fort along the Peace River. Although the fur-trading industry has since dwindled, Fort St. John continues to thrive. Fort St. John offers a number of great outdoor pursuits. Beatton Provincial Park, located on Charlie Lake 13 km (8 mi.) northwest of town, boasts a number of year-round recreational activities. In the summer, camp, swim, boat, and fish for walleye and northern pike in the lake, or toboggan, snow shoe, ice fish, and cross-country ski in the winter. Whatever the season, keep your eyes open for the many deer and elk that inhabit the park.

Back in town, make a splash at the local wave pool, which also features a relaxing steam room, hot tub, sauna, and waterslide, or keep your golf arm in shape at either of the city's two golf courses. Then peek inside a trapper's cabin and pioneer home at the North Peace Museum, located in an old-time schoolhouse, or discover how sweet a trip to Fort St. John can be with a visit to the Honey Place to watch the world's largest beehive in action.
